Budget hiking planner Go Wandr

Does anyone know Go Wandr?

It’s a web map app for planning summer and winter hikes, as well as sledding and cross-country skiing tours. It is currently in alpha testing and is aimed at users who want to plan their outdoor activities efficiently and cost-effectively. It was apparently developed by a Swiss person who also implemented Freepublicapis.com. The app uses data from OpenStreetMap (maps and POIs?), the SwitzerlandMobility Foundation (routes), opentransportdata.swiss (transport), and Open-Meteo.com (weather).

That’s not a lot of options for nordic skiing, better rely on OSM data

Yes. Which apps? Let’s give feedback and propose that to Go Wandr…

Unless I missed something, there’s no obvious way to give feedback from the app.

You’re right. So let’s give them some feedback. After all, it’s a Swiss developer.

I guess it may differ from area to area where to find more nordic-skiing tracks. Around my home area (Berner Oberland Ost) I find more tracks in Go Wandr than in OSM (overpass turbo piste:type=nordic) - the one in my community that only is in OSM is drawn wrong (But as I am not a nordic skier myself it will be hard for me to get a better track…).

The data for the nordic skiing tracks is taken from Schweiz Mobil, which probably makes it easier to include up do date information about the conditions.

Certainly. Schweiz Mobil called for centers a couple of years ago for ski routes, but nordic centers are not equally versed in cartography, apparently.

As the question is sure to turn up (yet another time, see previous discussions): no we cannot use data from Schweizmobil to model the routes in OSM.

Their current terms are here https://images.schweizmobil.ch/files/Datenbezug_SchweizMobil-Routen_web.pdf (only took about 10 clicks to get there).

We need to distinguish between the geometries of the actual infrastructure and that of the overall routes.

The former are hiking and cycling paths and similar infrastructure, this data is owned by the cantons and while in general “open data” the cantonal terms tend to differ and some are OSM compatible and some are not (any terms requiring downstream attribution are not compatible with our licence and we need an explicit waiver or permission to be able to use such data)*.

The higher level route information is owned by the ASTRA for everything that are Geobasisdaten des Bundesrechts and by Schweizmobil for everything else (for example canoeing and cross country skiing). Both organisations require (for the data that is available on open terms) downstream attribution and this is not compatible with our licence. We (SOSM) have had contact and discussions with both organisations, but that predates anything from Schweizmobil being open data. I would not rule out renewing an attempt to get permission (at least for QA purposes), I’m just rather pessimistic given the competitive situation.

* at one point the canton Thurgau was distributing bicycle route data as open data that was slightly different than that of Schweizmobil to avoid issues.
