Brand:wikidata tag for TUI Travel Agent in the UK

I’ve just noticed that NSI recently updated their “suggestion” for the brand:wikidata tag for TUI travel agents in the UK from the UK Specific TUI UK Q7795876 to the global TUI Group Q573103.

The NSI discussion thread explains the reasoning. This may well be the right thing to do. But it’s left the UK data in a worse state at the moment as most TUI outlets still have the old brand:wikidata value, but the new one is starting to be used.

So questions for the UK community: Is the tagging change correct? If so, should we bulk update all the old Q7795876 values to Q573103 for consistency?

I’m not convinced by this change - from what I can see, TUI UK still exists as a division of TUI Group. The NSI thread says that TUI UK merged with TUI Global in 2017 - but I don’t think that’s correct. 2017 is when the Thompson was rebranded to TUI. See TUI Airways - Wikipedia , section ‘Rebranding and latest developments’.

I don’t think it makes sense switching the brand tags to the multinational TUI Group brand when TUI UK still seemingly exists and operates their travel agencies.

I also agree that NSI shouldn’t be changing brand tags without communication without the local community. (Unilateral and back-door changes are an appropriate description here). It would also be better to do mass edits to update all pois at once rather than relying on sporadic iD tag ‘upgrades’.

Yes, I think the tagging change for brand:wikidata is correct.

TUI UK and TUI Airways do still exist as operators of the travel agencies and flights respectively (and TUI Travel still exists as a holding company), but the brand rests with the parent company TUI Group.

You could add operator:wikidata=Q7795876 to the UK shops instead, but there are so many subsidiaries of TUI worldwide that I think this would add an unnecessary level of complexity.

but is it existing as a separate brand?

If TUI London, TUI Scotland, TUI Smallborough etc would be a separate corporate entities should they get separate brand:wikidata tags?
