while working on climbing in OSM, I noticed a bunch of tags in use that have documented, more widely used equivalents on the Climbing wiki page. None of these changes affect the meaning of the data but since it touches a few hundred existing objects I’d like to get community approval before running through the edits.
The automated bot edit will be supported by @mateusz_konieczny who has plenty of experience with these kinds of edits. I will manually review the changes from the bot. After that we could run the bot automatically on a regular basis.
While I already took a look at a large amount of affected objects, let me know if you see any issues with this plan, edge cases I’ve missed, or objects/areas where local knowledge suggests a different approach.
There is a lot of inconsistencies in climbing tags, which makes sense considering the changes over time. I.e. a missing “sport=climbing” tag on some climbing features, old climbing tags on ridges, etc. We are looking to update crags that are missing the sport tag, for example.
In any case, I support the proposal here as a useful step in consolidating these.
I’d be glad to migrate more community-proposed tags if everyone is on board! I decided not to add the missing sport=climbing tag, to keep the initial proposal simple and safe.
Remove climbing:length=0 (249x) got approval from the original author of the tag to remove it.
Please response with a quick or if your’e okay with adding these to the initial proposal. That’s just to prevent creating yet another topic, but I’m also fine with opening one ;).
can you link to that changeset comment? All 249 were added by the same person, so if they want it to be gone I can zap it away
I would open a new one - in theory someone may be against deprecation/bot edit and fine with initial pool and they simply have not looked again into a thread
