Best Practices for Adding Small Local Features in OpenStreetMap

I am new to contribution and I noticed that some areas on the map are missing small local details like playgrounds and walking paths. I have been exploring ways to add accurate information without cluttering the map. While working on this, I was also thinking about how gaming platforms like roblox mega menu organize lots of details efficiently. Is there a best practice for adding multiple small features in OpenStreetMap so the map stays clear and useful for everyone? Any tips from experienced mappers would be really helpful.

Assuming they’re real features, I don’t think you don’t need to worry about cluttering the map with them. Displaying the data nicely is a problem for renderers not for us as mappers :slightly_smiling_face:

E.g. map apps often hide/show features based on how far you’re zoomed in to avoid visual clutter. Or even cluster similar features together beyond a certain zoom level.

Hi and welcome. Always nice to have people care and contribute.

Adding playgrounds and walking paths that you see on the ground is fine. Don’t worry about cluttering the map, because… sounds like a paradox, but we’re not making a map.

We’re compiling information (“mapping”) in the OSM database, that can be used by mapmakers (renderers). There are many, many renderers, making many, many maps. We don’t map for one renderer or one map, but for all, with as many details as we llike, and worrying about clutter is their territory!

Gaming platforms can use the OSM database, because it’s free to use as long as they acknowledge OSM Contributors. We have no control over their menus, organisation methods and renderings.

Happy mapping!

@adibablu For instance, depending on your location, https://playguide.eu/ may be an option to see playground details from OSM.
