Barrier=kerb wiki picture needs flipping [RESOLVED]

Me thinketh the picture in the barrier=kerb wiki going with the footed text needs 180 degrees flipping so the top side is at the left side of the image and the bottom of the kerb is at the right. This then reflects having drawn the kerb line from south to north.

(Where it was shot at what time of the day does not really matter, dusk or dawn.)

edit: picture flipped and subtext clarified.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to reverse the text description? The image is used in many pages and many languages, some of which might rely on the image staying exactly as it is.

I’ll try to figure out how long the description has been wrong.

Edit: the misleading description was added in September 2020: Tag:barrier=kerb: Difference between revisions - OpenStreetMap Wiki

For now I’ll just switch “left” and “right”. If there is real value in mirroring the image, it would have to be uploaded as a separate version, to avoid messing up other pages.

I think the description refers to the definition of left and right in the mapping instructions.

Probably it is best to remove the sentence altogether. The picture speaks for itself, and the mapping instruction is in the wiki text.

@ NeatNit

When you change the picture footer does it then not become conflicting with the main wiki text?

Oh I see. I undid my edit.

I agree, the image should be mirrored or a new image should be taken with the opposite orientation to be most clear.

It’s not needed to have a mirrored picture.

Simply removing the misleading text

“(right side is bottom, left side is top)”

would be best - as @Peter_Elderson said .

Because right side means “right side of the OSM-way” not “right side of this picture” or the mirrored picture …

Edit:
I removed that text “(right side is bottom, left side is top)” from the description.

And I’ve reverted your change to the description and mirrored the image instead.

The description field is not, as your edit comment suggests, the description of the image. It is the description of the tag. And the directionality is an important aspect of the tag’s definition.

Specifically, it’s important to document this prominently because any mapper who doesn’t know about it has a 50% change of producing incorrect data. And we all know that most mappers will not read through the entire wiki page before using the tag for the first time. So if this information is hidden somewhere down the page, it will be overlooked.

Thanks. For comparison, here’s the description of the natural=coastline tag:

Phrasing it like that is clearer, no one is getting confused why in the picture the land is on the right.

And now, once again, the text appears to describe the image. Especially mappers who do not actually read the page are likely to miss the actual meaning. Even more so, since the image actually fits the description.

PS the addition “of the way” does help.
