Background layers with web editor

When using the background layers to do edits I was very happy to find new layers available from the local county. E.g. newer aerial photos and tax parcel basemap. First of all I’d like to thank whoever makes this possible. It really makes editing easier and more accurate. How do they source this data and can I request that other background layers be made available? The local GIS guys say that it could come from REST service endpoint.

If I can request an additional layer it would be for higher resolution LIDAR. from the lidarportal.dnr.wa.gov.

Thanks
Mike

Layer configuration for iD is here GitHub - osmlab/editor-layer-index: A unified layer index for OSM editors. the description of the service that you mention is a ‘bit’ vague so it would need a bit of investigation to see if it is actually something that can be supported.

The license allows the use for OSM?
Basically, it works. Here is the URL for iD with the custom background (LIDAR WMS) with URL encoding for direct access (I have shortened the text description, but the link behind it works):
https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=id#background=custom:https://lidarportal.dnr.wa.gov/arcgis/services/lidar/wadnr_hillshade/MapServer/WmsServer?service=WMS&request=GetMap&layers=(…)&styles=&format=image/png&transparent=true&version=1.1.1&height={height}&width={width}&srs={proj}&bbox={bbox}

Here is the complete WMS URL template used, in plain text:

I wonder if all these (574) layers are really necessary?

Thanks. That works. I think that it covers the entire state…mostly. There are a few areas missing. Overkill for me as I’m focusing on San Juan Co. and nearby.

It needs pointing out that using the custom imagery functionality (in any editor) should always be a temporary measure.

If you don’t get it added to ELI and the JOSM imagery indices, other mappers will have a different set of sources and may well simply undo your changes because they can’t replicate how you mapped the geometries in question. With other words you are shooting yourself in the foot.

PS: yes and this is particularly true for the JOSM fanbois.

I’d add it if I knew how to do it correctly. In the meantime I have noted the source when I upload.

Before inclusion in indices, I wanted to perform some tests:

The REST service does not require the above layer specifications (top surface hillshade):
https://gis.dnr.wa.gov/site1/rest/services/Public_Geology/Lidar_Hillshade/MapServer/export?bbox={bbox}&bboxSR={wkid}&imageSR={wkid}&size={width},{height}&format=png&transparent=false&layers=show:1&f=image

iD link (top surface hillshade):
https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=id#background=custom:https%3A%2F%2Fgis.dnr.wa.gov%2Fsite1%2Frest%2Fservices%2FPublic_Geology%2FLidar_Hillshade%2FMapServer%2Fexport%3Fbbox%3D{bbox}%26bboxSR%3D{wkid}%26imageSR%3D{wkid}%26size%3D{width}%2C{height}%26format%3Dpng%26transparent%3Dfalse%26layers%3Dshow%3A1%26f%3Dimage&map=17/47.317083/-121.180607

The need for specifying many layers is eliminated, so the entry does not need to be updated if new layers are added.
However, the lighting is slightly different, and the quality is perhaps a little bit lower?

The REST service additionally has the “bare earth hillshade” layer:
https://gis.dnr.wa.gov/site1/rest/services/Public_Geology/Lidar_Hillshade/MapServer/export?bbox={bbox}&bboxSR={wkid}&imageSR={wkid}&size={width},{height}&format=png&transparent=false&layers=show:0&f=image
