Announcing an ATP integration tool

Hello everyone,

With the french community, I developed an a web tool to integrate All The Places (ATP) data into OSM, simply named atp2osm, it gets structure data from ATP to integrate large volume of data.

The tool helps contributors to filter and qualify data from ATP. It also provides features to help ATP contributors to follow which data source had to be added and fixed to be integrate in OSM.

In 5 months of work, we have integrated more than 70k tags in the French shops and amenities, with ~30 direct contributors.

Because each country has its own specificities (e.g., “extra-sea territories” in French), and because the amount of data is enormous (more than 10 GB is computed each day, only for French), the tool follows the rule: 1 instance = 1 country.

For now the French instance is hosted on my personal server, and I’m unable to host other countries. So I decide to share our work through a Docker (or Podman) image. That made the project easy to deploy by another community, with a simple configuration file and a little server. Translation is also supported; for now only French and English are available.

The purpose of this project was simple: exploit the ATP data that was previously mainly manually integrated. I wanted a contributor-friendly tool that allowed everyone to understand the impact of its contribution on its territory.

Main features are the following:

  • Adding tags to existing n/w/r
  • Modifying tags to existing n/w/r
  • Invalidating ATP data sources that are not “OSM-probitty” enough
  • Referencing missed and refused ATP data sources
  • Seeing statistics

Of course, it’s completely free and open-source, shared under the GPL-3 license. APIs allow everyone to export produced data, mainly integration history.

I hope that tool will find a nice echo in the community. I built it with the wish to help and improve the day-to-day usage of OSM data for shop and amenities searches. I will be happy to help you to deploy a new instance and respond to your questions.

Have a nice day,

Gwenaël.
