All applications running OpenStreetMap are running incredibly slowly on my system

I’ve been going around different websites using OSM in different locations (countries) on different systems with different connections and every single time OSM runs incredibly slowly. I don’t know exactly how to read the server page, but everything seems fine and I can’t find any results on how OSM is running slowly these days, so I’m assuming its me only. Can anyone help me out here?

Hi and welcome to OSM

In simple terms OSM is a just a database running on a server in the internet. Where exactly do mean OSM is “slow”?

I mean in websites that run with OSM. I’ll give you links to websites I know work slowly on my system (aside from OSM itself):

* Lijstitem

* Lijstitem

* Lijstitem

I’m convinced this is specifically happening to me because I don’t know of anyone else who is experiencing this. The map itself loads very slowly.

Taking the third one as an example, if I look at the browser console I see that raster tiles are being loaded from e.g. https://tiles.arcgis.com/tiles/1KSVSmnHT2Lw9ea6/arcgis/rest/services/basemap_stadsplan_v7/MapServer/tile/13/2734/4198. It’s not coming from OSM.

The second one is loading raster tiles directly from OSM servers (with attribution!). The first is raster tiles from e.g. https://a.basemaps.cartocdn.com/light_all/15/9648/12320@2x.png.

If these are all slow, then the common factor is nearer you than each of the sources of tiles.

Since only kentkart.com uses OSM-tile-server and nobody else mentions any problems, it must be on your side or your internet connection.

I don’t entirely think it’s my internet connection. It doesn’t work on my flat’s wifi, doesn’t work on the school wifi, doesn’t work on my parents wifi, and doesn’t even work on 4G. Surely I can’t just be that unlucky?

What is the common factor between each of those, apart from “the pictures you are downloading from three different web servers around the world were created (some time previously) from OSM data”? It’s “homeopathic thinking” to suggest that the pictures have some sort of “memory” of having being created from OSM data and therefore download “slowly” from three different sites :smile:

Right so these websites that use OSM data are not all connected to the current OSM servers and have no relation to them?

Also I have the same issue on the OSM website itself.

You mean, visiting osm.org takes a long time to load? Maybe the issue is on your browser or your device. Try another browser and another device.

Yep this is it. Using Firefox OSM loads way slower than using other browsers. I tested it on Edge and all the sites loaded quickly. Thank you for your help and hopefully this can be fixed for Firefox users too.

I’m using FF 135.0.1 (64-Bit) on Win11 and all works fast as expected. Consider to start your FireFox with a new (clean) profile or try to reinstall FireFox entirely.

Let me try that

Indeed it works just fine on incognito mode. Should I delete all my cache and cookies?

Deleting cache and cookies could be a start and maybe the solution. Further candidates could be add-ons or themes. Consider to start FireFox with a new profile.
