In my opinion, both types should only have ref-tags and no name-tag. And in the ref-tag there should in most cases only be one letter. What must not be contained (neither in name nor ref) are the NATO phonetic alphabet code words denominating the letter.
Couldn’t agree more! Aviation standards are such that anybody reading the letters aloud would use the phonetic alphabet, but we don’t need to quite literally spell that out.
If we did spell it out, by that same logic something like a La-Z-Boy furniture store would be tagged name=La-Zee-Boy (as opposed to La-Zed-Boy), which is just silly…
