Would anyone have a suggestion or example how to set unit numbers on complexes? Ideally I would want to be able to search xx Complex Name, and get a pin on the block in which unit xx is. Even better would be if when you zoomed into the map you could see the address ranges of each block.
The complex I was trying on is Way: Glen Gardens (1540815873) | OpenStreetMap . I tried setting tags like building:flats=158-165 on the buildings but that does not seem to be enough.
I don’t want to set an address node on each unit since I am not sure if that is publicly verifiable, when you drive around the complex there are large signs showing the numbers of each block, but a visitor really needs to look closely at each unit to get its number. In fact most of the boards showing ranges of numbers are only visible once you are inside the complex, does that mean I must not show them on OSM?

A warm welcome to the forum! It’s great that you’re making important contributions to OSM in this area, which is still relatively undeveloped.
You should first map the houses individually rather than as contiguous areas. The aerial photos clearly show the size of the individual buildings. This makes addressing them much easier. Without knowing the situation in South Africa, I would then add the address for each house. You’d use ‘addr:flats’ (these are the actual flat numbers within the building), rather than ‘building:flats’ (which only records the number of flats!). What about house numbers? Are there any there at all? If so: is there just one for the whole Glen Gardens area, or does each house have its own number? If the houses have their own numbers, there’s no need to include the address for the site. You can always enter addresses either on the building itself, or at one (or, if available, several) entrances (always with the respective flat numbers), or even on a separate node within the building.

Also have a look at interpolation, so you can see, why your tagging at the houses itself wouldn’t work.
