Adding Microsoft building footprints in Pasco County

Hi all,

Getting started mapping around Pasco County and buildings are mostly missing. I’d like to add them from the Microsoft US Building Footprints, which are ODbL and match up well with Esri imagery here.

Plan is one neighborhood at a time in RapiD, checking each building against imagery before I add it and letting RapiD catch anything that overlaps what’s already mapped. They come in as building=yes. I’ll skip or fix the ones that don’t line up.

If I go bigger than a neighborhood or two, I’ll do a proper import page and a separate account first. Saying hi before I start. Anything local I should watch for, or is someone already on this?

You might be better trying to get building footprints from the county. They’ll typically be better quality and so save everyone time in the long run.

End-user apps can just import the MSBF dataset themselves in the absence of OSM building data. It’s better to either add fully accurate buildings or not add them at all so incorrect buildings don’t get in the way of mapping work, and it’s a clearer signal to end user apps to add the MSBF data.

You can use the data as a pointer to where to apply mapping efforts.
