I’m sure this has been discussed many times in the past, but I didn’t find obvious answers while searching.
Is there any consensus to adding a business name and details as a point on top of the building it’s located in, or to the building polygon itself? Personally I think points on the building tend to render better on maps and work in all situations so I’ve always put them in as points, but there are a couple existing ones which have been added to the building itself.
Wondering if there is any consensus at all here which one should be preferred or if there are rules when to use each?
Personally, I add the building & address details to the building, then put a node inside it with the business details, even if it’s only a one-business building.
To me, it’s much neater that way, & easier to adjust in the future, but as always OSM, YMMV!
For most buildings I think a point makes the most sense. But for certain buildings that are built/designed for a specific purpose, I’ll tag the building itself.
For example, a fire station, railway station, standalone supermarket, etc.
I tend to follow what is already there. ie if the building exists and already has (a) business name/type details that I then add (sub details) or modify. Handy for historical search reasons. Most of my work though is in remote-ish areas where overhead imagery etc can be badly offset. I then create nodes (instead) as they are more position forgiving. This does duplicate building vs business addresses though.
