I am hoping to find an effective way to use my Garmin GPS to prompt me the existence of a nearby OSM fixme or note that has been uploaded to it as a POI file. The current problem is that even when the alert is set to a good warning distance (say 500m) it will only beep/trigger if the POI is within 30m of my route. Any in range Fixme/POI is visible on the GPS screen, but I then have to keep watching it I also take my hands off the wheel to touch its screen.
I take geotagged voice notes as I drive, that also saves the nearby (geotagged) Mapillary camera views, so if I voice the fixme solution I’ll easily find it on OSMiD. (See the bob3bob3 OSM diary for details)
The ideal fix would be to increase the off route distance to 300m on the Nuvi/Garmin, possibly with a developer mode change. If that fails I’ll have to write some code for the nearby Linux laptop to make its own alert noise, so I can check the Garmin screen and possibly stop driving when alerted. A more advanced idea is to have the laptop text to speech convert the nearby fixme/note, so that audio plus my response will be recorded in the voice notes.
Any ideas appreciated
