I can be almost 100pc sure that a church near me used to be tagged amenity=place_of_worship . Map feature here.
What I don’t understand is that this is Version 1: if the church was tagged properly before, it’s somehow been deleted, and replaced on the same footprint with a new feature.
Is there a way of going back in time to be sure that this really wasn’t the first time the feature was added to the map? Am I misremembering the amenity tag was there?
Usually when I convert a POI from a node to a polygon, I keep the original node as one of the vertices, or better still the entrance=* node.
That didn’t happen in this case, but looking at the deleted nodes in changeset #143914536 I found this:

Rather frustrating that “add heavy detail” meant deleting all the detail I had added on the previous incarnation (v2 on Andy’s link).
I’d better check and see if there’s anything else gone missing, too.
What’s the best way forward for the church? Resurrect the former way, or just re-add the tags to the newer version?
EDIT - Good grief, most of the changeset is deletions! Best to revert the lot?
Annoyingly they did actually add some detail so it might be a partial revert in JOSM sort of thing.
As the user only has 50 edits it might be worth a “Please don’t delete things you don’t understand” comment.
