Yes even AVIF is a worthwhile conversion. Compressing to a smaller size however also incurs an extra DC energy (and thus time) factor

If Panoramax would support them natively (instead of just for derivative images), then:

• Ideally, one would get a camera which records directly in AVIF or similar instead of standard JPG.

• If that is not possible, conversion would should be done client-side to distribute the load, e.g. in panoramax-cli before uploading

But AFAIK, currently it is being considered only for derivative images (used for fast browsing of images), and not the original pictures.

There are some major logistical hurdles (say) second uploading the 24 million images I have already put on Mapillary

I was suggesting for new imagery, I did not assume you would want to do that lol.

The daily load is actually quite staggering too, perhaps 15-40Gbytes per drive day. All done via a $$$ cellular network

That’s about a TB/month, crazy amount of work you do. I assume you have some sort of unlimited data plan?

Looks like there are scripts to move images from mapillary to panormax, ofc these should only be used if there is a lot of storage secured for our panormax server to store it all.

Actually I use a prepaid 300GByte/mo plan and I don’t travel every day. At the moment I go through that in 2-3 weeks, but shortly I’ll stay at one camp for 2 months. My usage jumps up and down, so it kind of averages 50GByte/mo. I also often stop two nights at a camp when I had only planned one, if I haven’t caught up with OSM entry enough. Best to do it with not only the photos and audio notes, but fresh in memory as well.

re the script to transfer Mapillary>Panoramax. That series of posts and the code was in 2024, so be best to check if the Mapillary API still supports by user and after date choice. I seem to remember there is a max download limitation per session as well. I don’t think they’d want the entire server copied!
