#5061304: Wrong municipality border leading to wrong address information of residence at couriers, etc

Hello,

I hope this is the correct platform to address a problem with the map.

Could someone solve the issue #5061304?

The municipality border is drawn incorrectly, placing my residence and of others in the wrong municipality and therefore the wrong municipality and area code.

This would normally not be a problem, was it not for the fact that couriers use openstreetmap and therefore have the wrong address in their database. It is even worse that I cannot order from the internet because couriers inform sellers that the address I gave is wrong and sellers send me messages that I have to correct my address, which is of course nonsense. The couriers rely on openstreetmap.

Therefore I ask openstreetmap with urgency to correct the municipality border, so the correct address is shown.

If you need more information, please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

Welcome.

What’s #5061304 supposed to refer to? There is no such extant object in the OSM database, and we do not have an “issue tracker” where this identifier could plausibly come from. It would be much simpler if you just posted the municipality name…

Ah, I got it, it is note 5061304.

I spot-checked the Municipality of Iraklio boundaries in OSM, and found two discrepancies from the cadastral data (which is a bit tricky to zoom on their website – one has to click it and then select “Zoom to”):

  • One is “yours”, where the boundary with Marousi should follow the Degleri and Kalavryton streets rather than Nestoros
  • The other is on the far north, where it’s missing the block north of Papanikoli street.

I can fix it myself, but I’d rather let Greek community try to deal with it in a more systematic manner. I wonder where we got the municipality boundary data, and how many other similar “small” discrepancies are there, affecting peoples’ lives…

Thanks. I cannot comment on the north part, only my residence. I have tried to mark the boundary in red and the affected area in green. This hopefully helps. It is a strange border. According to the greek cadastre Μαρούσι includes the park, but not the block of houses (including my residence) which belongs to Ηράκλειο.

The original addition of the boundary on Nestoros street seems to be done in 2014 by @ika-chan . No idea with what data those boundaries were added back then, but seeing currently the boundaries data from geodata.gov.gr, which come from ELSTAT, most of the boundaries even in Athens are pretty roughly drawn and not following specific roads, so it would be difficult to determine on OSM the specific streets it should follow, if it’s in a build-up area like this, unless we use other sources which can clarify that in some level. And then it comes the problem of license in case of maps.

For the Ktimatologio maps, I don’t know the license of the data which show the municipalities boundaries, because all the data in that site are copy-righted unless specifically mentioned and with a quick glance I can’t find that specific data info.

For that specific location, as I see on Ktimatologio (I can’t zoom more because the outline will disappear), it looks like Irakleio also contains the park. @Chris_TT could you give the link to the image above, because I can’t find the relevant options to show the data you see.

ok. the link I can give you is from Ktimatologio. https://maps.ktimatologio.gr/?locale=en&page=EN#data_s=id%3AdataSource_3-18d4b94d37d-layer-14%3A9425

You can see the area of Irakleio and zoom in to a certain point where the boundaries are still clear.

If you zoom beyond that point the boundaries are not clear but you can still see a line in the middle of the street, which I think are the boundaries of the municipality. It is not clear because the colors of both the lots and the municipality boundaries are blue(!). A different color would make things much easier.

This is all I have. I will try to find a better map and share with you.

Yes, the line your reffering to is the border line. The border line goes through Filellinon street.
If somone click on one side of the line he can see where it belongs. In the poopup window you can find the Information row and click the “View“ link right next to it.

All these highlighted side-streets belong to Irakleio.

And these belong to Amarousio.

I don’t think there is a license issue here, as we are not importing any digital data.
We are just using an information we see (visually).

copyright does not stop applying because data was copied based on visual inspection

If that was the case then we wouldn’t be able to even put in street names based on visual inspection.
And besides that, in order for someone to go to the court for a copyright issue he needs SOLID proves. He needs to provide a whole (and big) set of data.

if you mean surveying by walking and noting street name signs? Then you can do this

If you mean copying from other maps (with some exceptions) - then you are NOT allowed to do this and this apply both in case that you import with a computer program and also where you do this manually

I disagree, but i’m not going start this conversation. And in this case we are not copying data.

note that edits violating license must be reverted if spotted - and in some cases such reverts required deleted all the data within the city, as OK edit were based on copyright-problematic

please, do NOT copy from other maps and ranom datasets, without verifying the license

and yes, it includes copying by hand

I can’t believe that there is no open data dataset for administrative boundaries of an EU country out there…

Some quick googling leads to

which, among other things, contains Municipality boundaries (Kallikratis) dataset in various formats. In turn, there is a link to the open data portal at GEODATA.gov.gr - Maps
Which uses OpenStreetMap as the base map… :star_struck: However, for some reason, I can’t select any layer to view the data directly.

Here is the the boundary from the Geodata dataset in that particular location (red line).
As you can see it does not follow the existing roads.
